My basketball evolution

We had our last day of sportsfest in our local yesterday. I played basketball and I sucked.

I don't know why, but I'm not really good in organized basketball. Despite playing relatively well on weekly pick-up games, I haven't really found my place in many of the leagues I joined since I was a child.

The first league I joined, circa 1989 when I was a fifth grader, I wore the number of my Idol, Benjie Paras, #14. I ended up being called Joey Loyzaga because of my "baby fats". I even had to wear a shirt underneath my jersey from games 2 onwards because my 'man-boobs' were showing... sigh... Anyway, I scored 0 points and grabbed 0 rebounds in the whole tournament.

I vowed to wear #00 eversince to remind myself of my weakest point in basketball, and to push myself to get better. Or so I thought.

Forward to 3 more leagues and there's still 0 points credited to my name. I was able to secure some rebounds though, so I guess that's an improvement. I since concluded that I'm not a scorer so I decided to shift my attention to defense, and 0-0 is the point and rebound my opponent is going to get.

Defense did help my game a lot, and it's true what they say, offense starts with good defense. My next league (Sta Monica, San Pablo City), I played great in front of a cheering crowd of gay fans. Blocked some shots, got some steals, and even drew a critical offensive foul for my team. I had my good share of points and a heavy dose of winks and i love you's from the adoring men (yup, men in tightly-clad shorts!). It was arguably one of my best performances. And it was shortlived...

The following 3 tourneys, yesterday included, were all failures. Didn't score much and my defense was not enough to win games. Guess I'll just stick to pick-up games then.

Oh well... do you wanna hear how I started playing the guitar?
