Finding parking in Sydney (City)

Parking - just like Internet or traffic fines - are terribly expensive in Sydney. If you intend to drive to work everyday and you're not careful, you'd be easily spending between 25 and 34 dollars every day. The cheapest car park you'd find is the early bird promo from Wilson parking, which lets you come in between 7-9:0am and leave between 3-7pm, but at $16/day or $80/wk, that's still a little stiff.

Well the good news is, there are some cheaper parking available if you know where to find them. Here's what I've done so far. Just be mindful that I work in St. Leonards, NSW, so the stuff I'm gonna mention here are particular to that area.

  1. Streets with Free Parking

If you don't mind walking a bit, say 5-10 minutes, and you come to office quite early, there are actually a good number of streets that allow free parking (ie, no time restrictions). My office is just across the street of St. Leonards Train Station (see A in Map), so if I go south to Canberra and Marshall Sts (marked red in map), I can find a lot of no-restriction street parking there. It's the same when I walk northbound to Naremburn. There are plenty of free parking there but the walk is a bit longer.

My only problem here is, my work starts at 9am and by the time I reach that area, there'd be no more space left.

  2. Private car parks for Rent

If you look at gumtree, you'd see a lot of ads from people renting out their car space. The average rate right now is around $50/wk and i suppose you can negotiate to about $45 or $40. That's not a bad deal anymore, considering the cheapest weekly train ticket you'll find is $33. For just another $12, you'd save yourself a lot of time from waiting for trains and feeder buses, and be in the comfort of your own car.

To save even more, what I did was look for someone renting out a room (ie, looking for flat mates), asked if they had an unused parking space and offered to rent it. I managed to get myself a car space just 2 minutes away from the office and for only $35/wk. The best thing is, Lani and I work in the same office, so it's as good as a 2-for-1 deal for me. Nice, huh?
