Unity Games 2019

The church's annual Unity Games was held today at Minto Indoor Sports Stadium. It was a culmination of months of hard work and preparation by the Christian Family Organisation. And I am very happy that the event was a tremendous success. You see, it had been a very exhausting month for me having been thrust into leading the organising committee as soon as we got back from our SG/PH holiday in April. There were many sleepless nights, plenty of meetings, and non-stop phone calls to organise venues, dates, awards and people. But I'm glad that it's now done.

Now, the good part.

In the past 2 years, I wrote about how Ethan has become interested in basketball because of the Unity Games. Well this year is no different with Ethan showing even greater love for the sport and the camaraderie that it brings. To top it all off, he managed to score his first tournament points this year!

We arrived at the venue really early. Ethan was very excited to be with his friends and start playing hoops. The team lost some members because the families already moved to a different local, but the core of the team is still intact. There were Uly who was the primary scorer, Arien who was very active, and Ethan who's intimidatingly big. Then there was also a new transferee, Miggy who turned out to be a fantastic scorer as well. Erin and a few smaller kids fill out the roster.

The team cruised through the elimination beating the 3 teams they faced. In the finals, they went against North Sydney who had 2 really good players and gave them a great fight. The game went to a nail biting finish with the opponent leading by one point seconds before the buzzer. In their last possession, Miggy was fouled and awarded 2 free throws with no time left. With all eyes on him, the poor kid felt too much pressure and cried. Wonderfully though, he managed to regain composure and sank his 2 free throws for the win. The crowd went ecstatic!

And so the team will now represent the region in the upcoming District Regional Unity Games to be held in Queensland!
