Tesla, finally!

After a very long wait - we have finally received our new car - 2024 Tesla Model Y in Red

So I first mentioned about our plan to buy a car in Oct. Because of the tax incentives with novated leasing, we decided that we will be getting an electric car. At that time, the best option was a Tesla - specially that the alternatives we liked (7-seater Kia Sorrento or EV9) weren't going to be available for the next 8-12months. We ordered the Tesla expecting delivery within 3weeks to 2months tops. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Here's how our timeline ended up being:

  • 18 Oct 2023 - Ordered via Tesla website. Paid $400 order fee. Tesla says delivery is between Nov 7 to Dec 15.
  • 19 Oct 2023 - Tesla sent email advising that a vehicle (VIN) had been assigned to the order and it's now on board the Glovis Caravel carrier ship.
  • 21 Oct 2023 - Tesla sent the Final invoice which I promptly forwarded to the Novated Leasing (NL) company.
  • 21 Oct 2023 - Glovis Caravel arrived in Australian waters, intending to berth at Brisbane Port to unload some Tesla, then head to Port Kembla in NSW to unload the NSW-bound Teslas.
  • 26 Oct 2023 - Novated Leasing company sent the full payment for the car to Tesla
  • 13 Nov 2023 - Start of my monthly payments to the NL company. Obviously, no car yet.
  • 14 Nov 2023 - Tesla changed my Estimate Delivery Dates to Dec 11 to Jan 1
  • 22 Nov 2023 - Tesla sent email advising that the Glovis Caravel ship's berthing and unloading is delayed.
  • 11 Dec 2023 - Tesla changed my estimated delivery to Jan 14 to Feb 4
  • 13 Dec 2023 - Second instalment of my monthly Novated Lease payment
  • 21 Dec 2023 - Tesla sent email advising that because the car will not be delivered before 1st of Jan, the next government policies on stamp duty will kick in, which means I now have to pay the stamp duty out-of-pocket (about AUD 2,500) and file for reimbursement from Revenue NSW once I've taken delivery of the car. Such a hassle.
  • 22 Dec 2023 - Tesla updated my delivery estimate to Feb 6 - 27
  • 27 Dec 2023 - Tesla sent email advising that Glovis Caravel had been denied entry to Australia, after more than 2 months of waiting in the sea, and is now on its way back to China. They will update us again on what's gonna happen next.
  • 2 Jan 2024 - Tesal send email advising that they have assigned a new vehicle (VIN) to my order. This new car is now sitting in the Morning Crystal ship which is on it's way to Australia
  • 13 Jan 2024 - Third instalment of my monthly Novated Lease payment
  • 16 Jan 2024 - Morning Crystal docked and unloaded cars at Brisbane
  • 18 Jan 2024 - Morning Crystal docked and unloaded cars at Port Kembla (my car included)
  • 19 Jan 2024 - Tesla sent message that the car has arrived in Australia. This confirms that the car has now been unloaded from the carrier ship and is waiting to be transported to the delivery centre.
  • 24 Jan 2024 - Tesla sent email inviting to Schedule the Delivery. Earliest available is 7 Feb 2024 10am.
  • 30 Jan 2024 - Tesla sent message saying my car was incorrectly scheduled. Car won't arrive in the delivery centre until 15th Feb, so my pickup was rescheduled to 16th Feb 10am.
  • 2 Feb 2024 - I had to fly to Philippines from 12-18 Feb, so I rescheduled pickup to 19th Feb 2:30pm.
  • 13 Feb 2024 - Fourth instalment of my monthly Novated Lease payment
  • 16 Feb 2024 - Trip was extended so I had to reschedule again to 23rd Feb 10am pickup
  • 23 Feb 2024 - Got the car, finally!
