Ethan had been waiting for this for a long time. He said this was a critically-acclaimed show, receiving numerous awards from Tony and Grammys among others. And he's not wrong.
I have listened to the music in the car, so I sort of knew what to expect - musicwise. However, I had no clue what the story and setting would be. And boy, I wasn't disappointed.
The musical probably was the most intimate I've seen in a while. It's a love story and a (spoiler) tragic ending. The performances was great - the lead actor was wonderful and showed great vocal range. Lani thought his transitions between falsetto and chest voice weren't smooth, but I thought they were completed on-character - a shy naive boy with a lot of angst and love to give.
The setting was fairly simple. I like a lot of stage transitions which this show didn't have much of, but they had used the lights very well. Even using swinging lamps as props during the climactic moments of the play.
It was a fun show, well-deserving of the accolades it received.
